They both had done a lot of hurtful things to each other before they fell and Reaver lost his memory. Harvester and Reaver’s relationship was a lot. She was just a great character who is constantly surprising you. Yes, she is also very traumatize and stuffers from PTSD, but I think that is expected after being tortured for months. She is a badass angel who isn’t afraid to hurt someone. Harvester has been a bitchy demon for most of the series but the more you learn about her the more you realize how much she has manipulated Hell. It was dangerous, intense, and filled with a lot of intense feelings between them, which is just how I like it. I really enjoyed his journey to rescue Harvester from Hell. He has a sense of humor, his own code of honor, and is always determined to do the right thing, even if Heaven doesn’t see it that way. He isn’t a stuffy and annoying angel like the rest we have seen. I have liked Reaver from the very beginning. When he finds out that Harvester was actually an agent of Heaven and that she fell to protect his children, he decided he would do whatever he could to rescue her. He has fallen, had his wings returned, and found out about his children. Reaver has been the reckless angel throughout this series.

I recently reviewed The Painted Man (different author) and I wasn't kind to it, because I had no empathy for the characters and ultimately didn’t care what happened to them. It's a great combination of a well written book and first class narration. The book has a great depth of characters, and the narrator brings these to life wonderfully. Steven Pacey! Steven Pacey! Steven Pacey! I really enjoyed this, even more than the First Law Trilogy. Excellent narration rescues a rather forgettable storyline. The characters are all so extremely flawed and hateable to point you feel nothing for them, which doesn't give the listener much to identify and feel with through the course of the book. There aren't really any surprises here, no multi threaded grand design all coming together at the end. All in all it felt like the characters and story had moved from the sublime to the ridiculous. One particular failing that I found annoying was the eventual predictable situation of knowing something was going to go disasterously wrong when detailed and meticulously laid plans were set in motion. Abercrombie has excellent character development, but I feel that the characters are a little too disfunctional in an almost "American sitcom disfunctional family" style. Unfortunately this particular book is pretty much a straight out, almost boring tale, with only a twist at the end to keep it from being rated even lower. I listened to this book following the First Law series which I found very enjoyable. In this powerful and deeply inspiring book, Annabel Abbs uncovers women who refused to conform, who recognised a biological, emotional and artistic need for wilderness, water and desert - and who took the courageous step of walking unpeopled and often forbidding landscapes. But not all women did as they were told, despite the dangers history is littered with women for whom rural walking became inspiration, consolation and liberation.
